Trajan ruled Rome from 98-117 CE. He was the first emperor who was not Italian, he came from Spain and was a great general and leader. Emperor Nerva had no sons of his own and was impressed by Trajan's strength, power and accomplishments. He adopted Trajan as his own son, making him the heir to Rome. Trajan conquered foreign lands and expanded the empire. He made new construction and called it a forum, which was the center for culture and shopping. By the end of his reign, Rome had reached its' greatest size but the large size would be a problem for the rulers after him. At his death, he had no biological sons so control went to his adopted son, Hadrian.
