Nero ruled Rome from 54-68 CE after his step father, Claudius was murdered by his mother. He was only 16 when he came to rule. Nero is known for setting fire to Rome in order to blame the Christians to cause hatred for them. While Rome burned, Nero sat and played the fiddle, unconcerned by the whole event. After the blaze was put out, he confiscated a third of the city's land to build himself a huge palace. Nero is known for being a terrible man. He had one of his wives killed and gave her head to his new wife as a wedding present. He later kicked that wife to death when she was pregnant and also murdered his own mother, Agrippina, who got him to the throne in the first place. Nero was eventually declared a public enemy by the Senate and was hunted down by his own guards. Before they reached him, he committed suicide. After Nero's death, there was no heir to the throne, the empire was up for grabs.
